Securing Our Community: The Need for a Manned Gatehouse at the Centerville Road Entrance
Critical Security Vulnerabilities at Our Rear Entrance
Colonial Heritage markets itself as a secure, gated community—a promise that currently falls short due to significant vulnerabilities at our Centerville Road entrance. For years, residents have witnessed persistent problems with the rear gates, including frequent breakdowns, gates remaining open for extended periods, and an overall lack of access control that compromises our community’s security.
The Current Situation
The existing manned gate system at the Richmond Road entrance has proven inadequate for several reasons:
- During business hours and often at other times, the gates remain open, so anyone could blow by security and get in
- No verification system for visitors entering from this location who are headed for golf, weddings, wedding sales calls, etc.
- Anyone who gains access can freely travel throughout the entire residential areas
Comprehensive Solution: Additional (Secondary) Gates
To address these ongoing security concerns, we propose the construction of secondary gates past the main entrance which would help ensure that only residents and their guests are in the private parts of the community:
- Create a consistent security standard across all community access points
- Allow for proper visitor verification and logging
- Serve as a visible security deterrent
- Enhance our property values by fulfilling our “gated community” promise
Interior Access Control: Protecting Residential Areas
Additionally, we recommend installing internal tag-required gates to separate public areas from residential sections:
- Position automated gates beyond the Clubhouse and Golf Club parking areas
- Require resident or authorized visitor tags for access to residential streets
- Allow public access to amenities while maintaining residential security
- Prevent “pass-through” access from public events to residential neighborhoods
- Create multiple security layers to better protect our homes
The Cost of Inaction
Continuing with our current inadequate rear entrance security:
- Leaves our community vulnerable to unauthorized access
- Creates a false sense of security for residents
- Diminishes our property values as a “gated community” in name only
- Increases liability exposure for the HOA
- Fails to address growing security concerns among residents
Implementation Recommendations
- Obtain necessary permits from James City County
- Install internal access control gates
Conclusion
Our community security is only as strong as its weakest point. The question is not whether we can afford this improvement, but whether we can afford to leave this vulnerability unaddressed. Our community deserves comprehensive security at all entrance points—not just at the main gate. Click here for detailed maps.

Not in favor of a second gatehouse at the Centerville Road access, too much cost involved.
